Happy Songkran by Johnny

Greetings and hope you had a Happy Songkran Festival. For those unfamiliar with Songkran, here a brief overview. The Songkran Festival is a celebration of the Thai New Year. The celebration “officially” covers a period of three days 13 – 15 April. April is regarded as Maha Songkran, the day that the sun moves into Aries or the last day of the old year.

Songkran is the country’s largest and most colorful festival, symbolizing purification and renewal, family reunions, and cleansing. Traditionally water was poured over one’s hands. This has evolved into the massive street water fights as seen in the news world-wide. That can easily be found online, but not in this report. Photos here are of traditional Thai dance.

I’m not anti friendly water fighting, but had enough of it years ago. And as mentioned earlier, the official three-day holiday is extended close to two weeks here in Pattaya. But good for all the businesses that look forward to the profits made.

Songkran was really nice here at YooDee. Got a serving of ice cream twice. The staff put some extra effort into the traditional dance with a few days practice beforehand. The girls also did some traditional pouring of water over the hands afterward but I was on the wrong side of the pool for any photos.

As my mobility improves, I hope to get out & about for more photos. Hope all is well with you. Until my next report, stay well. – Johnny
